Let’s back Windle in his biggest bout
MATT Windle is no ordinary top fighter.
Articulate and bright as a button, the Birmingham boxer holds down a day job as a professional poet, for starters.
His rise has provided the game with a real Cinderella story. After losing heartbreak decisions at Midlands title level, he captured the Commonwealth title at light-fly.
Now he’s deservedly bagged the big one. Matt will face Connor Butler at Liverpool Olympia on June 9 for the European flyweight title. Butler’s Commonwealth belt will also be on the line.
Regular visitors to this site will know all about that fight.
But I liked Windle’s words of confirmation on his facebook site: “As Mike Lockley exclusively revealed earlier in the week, I have today received confirmation that my flyweight Commonwealth and European title fight against unbeaten champion Connor Butler will take place in his back yard at a venue I went to watch my old friend and former Commonwealth champion Don Broadhurst many moons ago - the Liverpool Olympia- on June 9.
“Away days are nothing new to me and stepping in to the lion's den really gets me going, but it would be amazing to have some of the Matclan out in force to drive me onto becoming a two-weight Commonwealth and European champion
“I'm a huge underdog, but **** it, let's go make a weekend of it - as well as make more memories and cause an upset along the way. Ticket prices to land soon.”
Matt’s right – it’s a great fight that deserves to be watched by a healthy Birmingham contingent.
Let’s witness the chapter in this amazing story.
