Melvin looks for his fourth straight win
JAKE Melvin – a young man emerging as a prodigious ticket-seller – is back in action in June.
The Birmingham fighter – son of former welter and light-welter contender Malcolm Melvin, who acts as trainer – is scheduled to take part in his fourth paid fight on BCB’s June 17 bill at the city’s Eastside Rooms. It is advertised as a light-welterweight bout.
It’s too early to predict what Jake, aged 21, can achieve in the sport, but, to date, he’s ticked all the boxes.
He’s a good looking man with an aggressive, fans friendly style and plenty of old fashioned “bottle”. Last time out, he overcame a flash knockdown to pummel Berman Sanchez.
Importantly, Jake sells tickets – and when starting out, that’s the best defence a young pro can ask for.
Jake entered the professional ranks without senior amateur experience. Importantly, he’s shown steady improvement in each of his apprentice bouts – all points wins over the fledgling four round distance.
A move to six rounders beckons and – injury free – Melvin should be in for a busy year.
His dad, Malcom, called it – Jake is a work in progress. He’s some way from being the finished article and punters need to realise that. But he’s shown indications of developing into a very accomplished boxer.
In an early interview, Malcolm said: “It’s very early days, there’s a long road ahead. He’s a very tough lad and it’s a case of putting it in the right direction.
“(Naeem) Ali (Jake’s second opponent) said afterwards that Jake buzzed him in the third. If you look at his resume, it’s very hard to get him out of there, he knows every trick in the trade.
“Jake’s filling out, he’s only going to get bigger and stronger. He hasn’t got his man-strength yet. If he keeps showing the same commitment and improvement, we’ll have a fighter on our hands. I’d like to see him out four or five times this year, then we’ll have a look and know more about where he’s going. We’re quite excited because we know he’s getting a lot better.”
The June bill also features local favourites Ryan Kelly, Tommy Collins, Lewis Morris, Brandon Jones, Hamza Azeem and Kay Jiminez.
