Jay starts his career with win over Hall

West Brom fan Griffiths has his hand raised for first win

NEWCOMER Jay Griffiths – a fighter brave enough to wear short emblazoned with “Baggies” in his Wolverhampton debut - fought aggressively to take every round against Black Country warrior MJ Hall.

The 27-year-old ended their four rounder at The Hangar last night (Friday) like a steam-train before claiming a 40-36 decision.

Brierley Hill southpaw Hall – a veteran of over 100 fights – provided the perfect first lesson for the new pro.

He covered up in corners, slipped and spoiled. MJ knows how to last the course against young guns.

Griffiths, from Tipton, but now billed out of Wombourne, bristled with bad intent from the first bell. Tall for the weight (11st 7lbs 4oz) he slung punches from both hands and even employed a bolo-type uppercut. His left hook was particularly impressive.

A nice, sharp right began Jay’s work in the second before he targeted Hall’s (11st 3lbs 9oz) body with hooks.

Griffiths doubled his jab in the third and, as the punches kept coming, Hall dropped his hands in a show of frustration.

He really opened the throttle in the last to have the seasoned journeyman holding on. The fourth was a dominant session for Jay.

“I’m happy as I can be,” Griffiths said afterwards. “He stayed away a lot and it was hard to open him up.

“But I kept up the punches and kept up the pressure.”
