WELL supported Finley Cooper’s fans celebrated as if a British title had been won after the 20-year-old made a pleasing pro debut last night (Friday).

And middleweight Cooper, from Wolverhampton’s Bradmore district, looks a useful addition to the paid ranks. On BCB’s Hangar bill, he dominated his four rounder with Kispas Zulgis, jabbing crisply, cutting off the ring and working well to the body.

Add to the mix the fact the lad certainly puts bums on seats.

Finley (11st 9lbs 4oz) took every round for a 40-36 scoreline – sparking jubilation from his supporters.

To his credit, Zulgis (11st 11lbs), a Latvian based in Peterborough gave it a go and, in the second, had some success with wide right hands.

Cooper, however, kept a trip-hammer jab in his opponent’s face and, in the first, earned his opponent’s respect with a hard right hand.

He upped the gears with each round and by the final session was unleashing shots to the body. One peach of a left hook forced Zulgis to retreat across the ring.

Finley Cooper salutes his large fanbase

Finley showed discipline and will have learnt from his first pro lesson. An exciting journey lies ahead.

He said afterwards: “I feel great. I didn’t get a knockdown, but I definitely hurt him.”
