Baggie Boy Griffiths dominates an old foe

Griffiths and his team after landslide win on Friday

BAGGIE Boy James Griffiths went over old ground on Friday night in the elongated form of Wiltshire journeyman Paul Cummings.

And at Wolverhampton’s Hangar, the 29-year-old again registered a four round, whitewash win – 40-36 on referee Kevin Parker’s card.

The return was pretty much a carbon copy of the first encounter last December. Griffiths, from Wombourne), pitched and Cummings, a veteran of over 90 bouts, either caught or smothered.

He’s a tough man and absorbed heavy body shots. One particularly meaty left to the ribs caused him to sag in the last, but he refused to fall.

“I thought it was a good performance,” Griffiths (11st 8lbs) said afterwards. “I put the work in, I wanted a six rounder but it didn’t happen.

“I take my hat off to him because he’s a tough lad. I’ll keep working in the gym. I’m in no rush, I’ll wait and see what my manager has in store.”

Griffiths jabbed well, touched with shots before unleashing the heavy stuff and threaded uppercuts through tall Cummings’ (11st 6lbs) guard.

After a one-sided first, Paul showed more ambition in the second before shipping classy uppercuts from both hands in the third.

He was put under the cosh in the last but fiddled his way to the final bell.

Griffiths is a good fighter now unbeaten in seven. 2025 will be the year for tougher tests and longer distances.
