Warren signs-up top heavyweight Lewis
LEAMINGTON’S Commonwealth Games heavyweight gold medallist Lewis Williams has signed pro forms with promoter Frank Warren.
And he’ll make his pro bow within days. The 25-year-old’s debut takes place at Resorts World on Saturday, November 2 – the venue where he clinched Commonwealth glory.
Lewis, a product of Edwin Cleary’s busy gym, fights on a massive bill staged by Warren’s Queensberry Promotions and topped by Liam Davies’ IBO super bantam defence against Shabaz Masoud.
He’ll be managed by Cleary and continue to be trained by the man who brought him such phenomenal success in the amateurs ranks.
That’s understandable. The Leamington sweat-shop is already riding high in the professional sport courtesy of European champ Danny Quartermaine.
Lewis turns over with a truly outstanding CV, crammed with silverware. As well as the gold won at Birmingham’s Commonwealth Games in 2022, he captured European bronze the same year and in 2021 reached the quarter-finals of the world championships.
He also collected two national titles in an unpaid career stretching over 100 bouts and was ranked as high as fourth in the world.
Williams said:” I am privileged and thankful that I am being taken on by what is the best team at the moment.
“Over history Frank Warren has built the best fighters, hasn’t he? He has always done the best job of building fighters.
“So, you look at that and think he will build my career and build me as a fighter. That is what my plan is.
“It is perfect timing. It was always my plan to turn professional this year and the world is going mad for boxing at the moment, so the stars are aligning for me. I have taken everything I’ve learned at Team GB home to Leamington Spa and I’ve built my own team.”
Frank Warren said: “I am so happy to welcome an exceptional young talent in Lewis to Queensberry.
“Lewis comes to us with a very significant pedigree and is ready to make a big impact as a professional.
“Everybody should make sure to catch Lewis’ professional debut in Birmingham on November 2.”
