Tompkins registers a landslide points win

You can see what the win means to new pro Todd Tompkins

SOUTHPAW Todd Tompkins can look on his second pro outing with satisfaction.

The super-middle looked sharp at the Premier Suite, Cannock, on Sunday. He kept the jabs followed, doubling and trebling the leads, to take a landslide 40-36 decision over seasoned and well travelled CJ Wood.

The bout showed Tompkins, billed from Northampton, but fighting out of Birmingham’s Eastside gym, is travelling in the right direction.

He lacks, however, the stature to reach his potential at super-middle (12st) and will, I’m sure, slim down to middle.

“I boxed well, I felt fit in there,” the 27-year-old told me. “He was a tough guy, he took it to me,  I felt his power, but I stuck to my game plan. I’ve felt more relaxed than in my last fight.”

Tompkins started as he meant to carry on, slotting home jabs before hooking to the body with the same hand.

Woods, from Middlesbrough, stalked, looked to work the body, but had to absorb a stream of leads on the way in.

Tompkins produced his best work in the third, showing more spite, then finding the room for a lovely left uppercut.

He was now finding the target for straight rights and lefts and drove forward in the last to cap a dominant, disciplined display.

A product of the white collar circuit, Todd appears to be enjoying life in the professional ranks.
