Singh and Gurung are on the way up

Callum Singh…moving towards title fights

CALLUM Singh’s march towards title fights continued in his home city on Saturday – and with each outing the 22-year-old looks a more complete pro.

At the Skydome, Singh dominated Ricky Leach, a veteran of over 70 contests, notching up a 40-36 decision after four rounds.

That was his fifth straight win and a step-up isn’t too far away for Callum.

“I didn’t get the stoppage, but it’s about experience,” he said.

Singh weighed around featherweight for this one, while Leach was close to the lightweight limit. The Coventry prospect aims to make his mark at bantam or super-fly, however.

Leach, from Kent, is a hard man to stop. With gloves high, he was in defensive mode from the get-go.

Singh boxed sensibly, working his way in behind a fine  jab before spearing Leach with right hands to the body.

By the third he was opening up with both hands and Leach spent much of the last round pinned against the ropes.

With each contest Minaaz Gurung, Britain’s only pro of Nepalese heritage, is improving.

Opening the show, the Nuneaton light-welter made it a hat-trick of wins by taking every session of his four rounder with Jake Smith, 40-36.

Minaaz Gurung reflects on a job well done

“I did a lot better than my first two fights,” said Minaaz whose grandfather served in the Gurkhas.

That he did.

Gurung showed patience to find a way inside and then unleash heavy left hooks. Doncaster’s Smith, who has won only one of 17, switches stances in an attempt to frustrate his opponent, but was walked down and punished.
