Scott set to promote bills in Kazakhstan

Murray with the late Marvin Hager during a Premier Suite event

IT’S a fight story that is beyond bizarre, but new  promoter Scott Murray is poised to stage major shows in Kazakhstan.

As yet nothing has been announced or publicly confirmed, but M6 Sport has been given details from a number of reliable sources.

We have approached Murray who declined to comment. Tellingly, he refused to confirm or deny our story.

The deal forges a truly remarkable link between former heavyweight Murray’s Staffordshire hometown of Cannock, where, to date, he has exclusively staged shows, and the vast Central Asian country.

But then Scott has made a habit of making the seemingly impossible possible. He has attracted a number of boxing legends to his Premier Suite venue.

And those VIPs in attendance at his next glitzy Excelsior Sporting Club dinner show will include Ohio’s outstanding former world lightweight champ Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini and renowned American sportscaster Al Bernstein.

Murray evidently has friends in very high places.

Of the Kazakhstan venture, one insider said: “Scott is doing it with a major businessman over there – and the first show could be as early as the end of October.

“The plan is to start with a dinner show, then bring in major televised bills. We’re talking big events – all in the capital Astana - featuring world class fighters.”

Stourbridge’s Sam Eggington has been put on standby for a bout over there, I understand.

And there are plenty of top, top performers in Kazakhstan, a fistic hotbed that produced middleweight great Gennady Golovkin.

Back at home, Murray’s next Excelsior Sporting Club on September 26 show will see Zach Evans fighting in his home town. Super-bantam Nyall Berry returns after his IBF European super-bantam bid ended in defeat and Midlands champs Jess Barry and Liam O’Hare also continue their drive to the top.

He follows that with a public show at the Premier Suite on October 11 with Cannock middleweight hope Ollie Cooper likely to be in action.
