Danny gets tips from great Freddie Roach

Quartermaine met Roach during a West Coast break

TO be the best, you have to learn from the best.

And Leamington’s Danny “Hurricane” Quartermaine grilled one of boxing’s true legendary trainers during last week’s visit to Los Angeles and Vegas.

The 27-year-old, unbeaten in 12 and closing in on a British title fight, received priceless tips from Freddie Roach, the man who has coached champs such as Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto and Amir Khan.

As well as talking to the great, Danny visited Freddie’s Wild Card gym, in Hollywood, and LA’s Mayweather gym.

Danny said of Roach: “He’s a very humble guy. Whether you’re a novice or top pro, he still gives you his time.

“He’s a big character. He has his health issues, but he’s still that fun, bubbly character. I last saw him two years ago when I was still to win a title. It was good to see him having won two European titles. That sparked a lot of interest.”

Danny, who enjoys a huge fanbase, looks set to fight again in November. He’ll have to wait a little longer for a British title shot, however. Champion Reece Bellotti must first defend against Michael Gomez Jnr.

“A fight in November, that’s the talk,” said Quartermaine who has a promotional deal with GBM. “Maybe a title defence or we could look at a different title. That will be the plan and next year try landing that British title fight.”

In June, Danny recovered from a flash knockdown to widely outpoint James Chereji for the WBO European belt: he already possessed the IBF version.

It was, said trainer Edwin Cleary, a five star performance. He told me: “I honestly couldn’t see a flaw, it was a great performance. He had that flash knockdown and reacted straight away, he was up against a much heavier opponent, he had cuts over the eye and on the scalp and he still dominated. If that’s not a top professional boxer, what is?”
