Pegg: Berry is my ticket to Las Vegas

Nyall Berry…back in action at Excelsior Club on June 22

EASTSIDE chief Jon Pegg has been told he’s found his “ticket to Las Vegas”, writes Matt Bozeat.

Pegg has taken Sam Eggington from the small halls to the top of the boxing world – and he’s plotting a similar journey for the unbeaten featherweight known as “Non Stop”.

The problem is, Nyall Berry has looked so good winning his first seven fights, Pegg is struggling to match him this month.

The plan was for the 23 year old to fight for the vacant Midlands Area championship at Cannock’s new Excelsior Club on Thursday, June 22.

Berry had his last fight in Bar Sport’s Premier Suite on the opening night of Scott Murray’s Excelsior Sporting Club and pounded Khvicha Gigolashvili for six rounds.

Pegg says he may have to look overseas again for an opponent for the June 22 show – and has been told Berry could take him to the world’s fight capital.

Pegg said: “Nyall went up to spar Paul Butler at Joe Gallagher’s gym and Joe told me afterwards, ‘he’s your ticket to Las Vegas.’

“Joe remembered Nyall coming to his gym as an amateur and has always rated him.

“He mirrors Sam in many ways. He lives the life, trains like a demon and they are similar in manner as well.

“Sam says he likes it when Nyall is next to him because nobody says he’s a moaner any more.

“Sam is glad there’s someone in the gym who’s more miserable than him! He says Nyall makes him look cheerful by comparison.”

Pegg says his achievements with Eggington are proof he’s the right man to ensure Berry fulfils his potential.

He said: “Nyall has the same walk them down, break them down style that Sam has. I’ve told Nyall, ‘You have all the same attributes as Sam and you have the advantage of me having 10 years’ experience working with Sam as well.’”
