Nyall stays busy with bout at the H Suite

Nyall Berry…developing an old-school American style

NYALL Berry, the feather with welterweight firepower, marks time while waiting for the inevitable title opportunity with a bout at Edgbaston’s H Suite on October 6.

It will, at least, give the 24-year-old – recently crowned Midlands prospect of the year – a chance to unleash the frustration of seeing a succession of title dreams dashed.

To put it bluntly, Chelmsley Wood’s Berry is being swerved. At this level, the boxer, undefeated in eight, hits too hard and looks to good.

The champs need him like influenza.

“No one wants to know,” manager Jon Pegg lamented. “But we’re not going to sit there and wait for a big fight to happen, we’re not going to make that mistake. We’ll keep busy.”

Berry remains a work in progress and Pegg says his gym work has, of late, gone through the roof. “It’s a good job those who are avoiding him can’t see what he’s showing in the gym,” he said. “They’d be scared to death, he looks menacing.

“He’s sparring heavier lads and is relentless. He’s in front of you, using good head movement and never taking a backward step. It’s old school American.”

The nine bout October 6 bill has a lot of strength in depth.

Mike Tyler…hungry to face big names on big shows

Mike Tyler, a Bermudian based in Birmingham, has his first outing since April on the show. The 27-year-old is unbeaten in seven - two stoppages - and hopes to soon net a title fight at light-middle.

He is a man not lacking in confidence. He said: “To be honest, I’m not sure I want a Midlands title anymore. I want the big shows, I want to fight the big names.

“If I can’t get a title shot in the next two fights, I want to be on the big shows.

“I’m tunnel vision, I’m ready to go. I’m in camp and getting ready for October 6.”

Welter Davien Daniel, who looked so explosive in halting Charlie Sheldon in one round in June, hunts for his third victory on the bill. Pegg laughed: “If he carries on the way he did against Sheldon, we’ll have the same problems we’ve already got with Nyall.”

The Second City’s Elliott Sowe, with just one loss in six, is also scheduled to appear, along with exciting super-bantam prospect Brad Coley.

Also prepare for the comeback of welter Brett Egan, a man with a huge following. He, alone, should ensure a very healthy crowd.
