Danny has answer to Jordan’s question

Danny Quartermaine…fights for version of European title

SIMON Jordan has been told the fighter he’s looking for is in Coventry next weekend, writes Matt Bozeat.

The former Crystal Palace owner-turned-media personality has asked his 10 million listeners on TALKSPORT: “Why don’t boxers take risks ?’

Edwin Cleary says he has a fighter who takes risks in his Leamington gym, Danny Quartermaine.

He faces hardened Romanian Alex Rat for the vacant IBF European super-featherweight championship at the Skydome on Saturday, March 9.

GBM Sports are promoting the show and Cleary hopes Jordan takes notice of the 10 round joint top-of-the-bill fight.

He said: “I’ve heard Simon saying: ‘Why don’t fighters take risks ?’

“Danny Quartermaine takes risks.

“When we boxed on a Sky Sports show, we gave them the name of an opponent and were asked, ‘are you sure you want to fight him?’

“We took it and Danny stopped him.

“Then we fought a 9-0 former amateur international (Jack Hillier) and beat him as well.

“Now we’re taking on an experienced 10-round fighter in a 50-50 fight.

“I hope that if Danny wins, Simon mentions him and starts supporting him because he’s the fighter he’s looking for.”

Quartermaine was often thrown in at the deep end in his 89-bout amateur career – and Cleary explained why he’s happy for the 26-year-old to roll the dice in the professional ring.

“Win, lose or draw, Danny will be a better fighter for the experience,” said Cleary.

“He will learn a lot.

“I know that good amateurs do get rushed on in the pros and lose, but the way he’s looking in the gym, I can’t see Danny losing.”

Quartermaine will have more than 400 supporters cheering him on in the biggest fight of his career on what promises to be a noisy night.

Coventry middleweight Brad Goldsmith has also sold hundreds of tickets and GBM Sports hope there will be 3,000 fans at the show.

Cleary said: “This could be the start of something special.

“GBM are getting behind Danny and we’re hoping this is the first of many big nights at the Skydome.”
