Barry on Excelsior’s big Irish night card

Jess Barry…will represent Ireland in bout with Sheriee Barnes

JESS Barry – Coventry’s female fighting force – makes a return to the plush surrounds of the Excelsior Sporting Club for her fifth pro outing.

And this time, the 29-year-old will be representing the Emerald Isles at Scott Murray exclusive club on a fight night organised to celebrate St Patrick’s Day.

The opponent on a March 21 card that sees an England select face an Irish select will be Sheriee Barnes.

It looks an undemanding test for Barry who is closing in on a Midlands title fight at either super-feather or feather. She’s lost one – narrowly – and says: “Women’s boxing is bigger than ever and if I can get the right fights, doors will open for me.”

Barnes, from Sheffield, has lost all five pro fights on points.

Barry, who trains out of Birmingham’s Eastside gym, appears a woman of many nationalities. On the Excelsior’s St Andrew’s Day show, she represented Scotland in a similar home nations set-to.

The “Banshee’s” Irish heritage appears stronger.

It looks like being a great night, with the Excelsior staging its first title fight – Liam O’Hare and Tom Brennan for the Midlands middleweight belt.

The Midlands prospect of the year, Niall Farrell, is also in action in his first six rounder.

The long list of VIPs is also impressive and includes former world heavyweight title challenger Gerry Cooney.
