Walker: ‘Every man and his dog are in for a wicked fight’

The super fight is almost here. Stand back and wait for the explosion

THE buzz surrounding Wolverhampton powerhouse Conah Walker’s battle with Cyrus Pattinson is getting louder with each day.

The welters clash in what looks a sure-fire thriller at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena on August 19.

The mega bill – streamed by DAZN – drips talent, but Walker-Pattinson is the bout that has really captured the imagination of fans.

Other contests shine, the 10 rounder, with Pattinson’s WBA international belt on the line, dazzles. Fireworks are expected from two aggressive, come forward fighters.

Geordie Pattinson, aged 29, is looked on as the next big thing, the man being guided to stardom. He has won six on the spin – four by stoppage – and is coming off a thrilling ninth round victory over Chris Jenkins.

Rumours swirl that a Pattinson win on August 19 would be rewarded with a Newcastle mega fight against Lewis Ritson.

Walker, aged 28 and Black Country to his bootlaces, is the rugged, seasoned pro who has grabbed glory the hard way during a 14 fight career (two losses). He sucks the fighting life out of opponents through incessant pressure.

And he’s oozing confidence for this one.

Conah said: “I respect him for taking this fight because I know he’s thinking, ‘I’ve got a good fighter in front of me’.

“I respect him for taking the fight. It’s a big mistake because it’s too early for him. I’m not going to come out slagging him off, there’s no need.

“If he boxes the way he did against Jenkins, every man and his dog are in for a wicked fight. I’m hoping he does.

“I don’t know what he’s planning to do, to be honest. He may come out on the back-foot, but it looks like he’ll stand and fight. It doesn’t matter, I’m happy to chase him down.

“This has to be the pinnacle of my career to date. I’m boxing live on DAZN, for one. There’s a beautiful belt that would put me in the world’s top 15 and it’s in Birmingham.”

Pattinson has shown Walker plenty of respect in the build-up.

“He’s a good fighter,” he told youtube channel International Boxing News. “He’s game, tough, strong, aggressive – we’re very similar. It looks like it will be another barnstormer. He can box as well and has good head movement.”

He warned: “My conditioning is on another level again.”

Those in Birmingham on August 19 should brace themselves for an earth tremor. Its source? The Walker-Pattinson fight.
