Vicky faces a tough defence of her title

Vicky Wilkinson…a clash with Kirsty Hill looks real cracker for fans

WOMBOURNE’S Vicky Wilkinson has been given a swift chance to get back in title action following the first loss of her pro career.

The Midlands arm of the British Board of Control have called for Vicky to defend her Midlands junior-lightweight title against Grimsby’s Kirsty Hill.

In a circular, the Board has called for purse bids to be submitted by Sunday, June 11, and the bout to take place before the end of October.

The call to arms came after 40-year-old Vicky suffered her first professional setback. With the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title on the line in March, Vicky was stopped by Rhiannon Dixon. The Warrington prospect closed the show in the sixth with body punches.

Vicky, who works as a recruiter for the army, made a slice of boxing history last November when she became the first woman to take a Midlands title. Infront of her Wolverhampton fans, she outpointed Beccy Ferguson.

The only other minor blip on her seven fight record – a Commonwealth junior-lightweight title draw with Kristine Shergold – appears an injustice. Most impartial observers had Vicky a handy winner.

Kirsty Hill, from Grimsby, looks a tough opponent – and the proposed title fight a very entertaining one.

I watched 31-year-old Hill outpointed Ferguson in Stoke last year. She’s well schooled and has a good engine.

In her fourth pro fight in March, Hill suffered her first loss, losing on points over six rounds to Elizabeth Oshoba. No disgrace there – Nigeria’s Oshoba had won her previous three paid outings by stoppage and Hill made the Bethnal Green battle close, 58-56.
