Tori: I want a British title by end of 2024

Tori-Ellis Willetts…gained her fifth win at Coventry Skydome

I’VE put on record in the past that I consider Tori-Ellis Willetts one of the best female fighters on the scene, someone capable of making an impression at world level.

She is – and I can say it with confidence because of the lack of strength in depth in the modern game – a champion in waiting.

Tori has the unpaid pedigree to go far. As a Team GB flyweight, she pretty much mopped up.

How is this for a CV? Twenty-nine fights, two time Elite English national championship and two time GB champion.

It’s good to see the Sutton Coldfield super-bantam’s career again firing on all cylinders. The girl they call “Tornado” had been out of action for seven months before emerging at Edgbaston’s H Suite in May and winning a six rounder.

Tori was a late addition to GBM’s mammoth bill at Coventry’s Skydome last weekend and took every session of a four rounder with Kerry Orton, 40-36. Orton may be a natural lightweight, but she’s limited, having lost all 10 of her pro bouts.

Much, much stiffer tests await Tori, who stretched her unbeaten record to five. She believes she’ll fight for the British title before the year’s end.

There have been a lot of behind-the-scenes changes for the red-hot prospect. Tori is no longer with Max McCracken and is now being trained by old amateur coach Karly G back where it all started – Eastside gym.

“I would’ve gone pro with Karly at the beginning if he’d had his pro licence,” the 29-year-old said.

“I’m happy with the performance (at the Skydome). It was a fast pace despite a last minute call-up. I took the fight at nine days notice, I just took the opportunity to keep busy with a British title on the line in September.”

Tori admitted things haven’t gone exactly to plan. “There have been a few problems,” she said, “but I’m in a happy place and the only way is up.”

After the Orton victory, Tori posted on social media: “A whirlwind experience, but grateful for the opportunity to showcase my skills

“We stay ready for night like these…nine days fight notice, eight opponents turned it down, gave away two weight classes but still we move to 5-0.

“Thank you to all those that came to show support last night - I appreciate you all. Thank you to my sponsors that continue to support my journey and help towards making it possible. Huge thank you to my coach, team and manager. Let’s get those belts!”
