Singh moves up to bantam in title hunt

Callum Singh with trainer Tom Powell. Out again next month

CALLUM Singh has bowed to the inevitable and moved up to the bantamweight division.

The decision has been made after the talented Coventry fighter’s bid to take the Midlands super-flyweight title was scuppered on the scales.

Singh came in overweight for his battle with champ Sean Bruce last October. The bout still went ahead as a non-title eight rounder and Callum took the decision.

At the time, the setback was partly blamed on scales at Singh’s gym that were incorrectly calibrated.

But the boxer, unbeaten in seven, this week admitted: “I think I’m too big for super-fly. You have to ask at what point does making the weight compromise your performance. It’s all wear and tear on the body, as well.

“I’m 5ft 8ins tall, I’m still only 22. In the future, I could move up again to super-bantam.”

Looking at Callum’s long body, he could end up at featherweight. Making super-fly must’ve required very hard graft.

He’s back in action at Top Promotions’ show at Sports Connexion Leisure Centre, Coventry, on February 22 – and burning to make his mark in the new division. An opponent has not yet been named.

“I’m ready for whoever,” he said. “I’ve said to Jon (manager Jon Pegg), ‘get me anyone’. My next fight could be against a journeyman, but I’ll train as I always do.”

Callum, part of Brendan Norman’s busy Bulkington gym, is in a hurry to grab a belt at bantamweight.

He added: “I’d love a Midlands title, it’s always been something I’ve wanted to achieve. I definitely think I can achieve more, but I’ve always wanted a regional title.”
