Singh makes it three pro wins on the spin
PRO newcomer Callum Singh worked well to the body, chipping resistance from Sean Jackson on the way to one-sided victory at Coventry’s Sports Connexion last night.
Singh, one of the country’s few Sikh fighters, dominated from the get-go against an opponent who was in defensive mode for the entire learning four rounder. He won every minute of every session, 40-36.
The Coventry bantam is now unbeaten in three. The 21-year-old is aggressive and busy, but will go on to face fighters with more fire in their belly than Manchester’s Jackson who is still chasing a win after 20 bouts.
Singh told me afterwards: “I went for the stoppage in the last round, but didn’t get it. You’ll see me at my best against opponents who really come to win.”
He added: “I’m here to win titles 100 per cent, otherwise I would’ve taken up golf.”
Singh (8st 7lbs 2oz) did everything that was asked of him on Tommy Owens’ packed show. In the first, he jabbed sharply and dug right hooks to the body as Jackson (8st 6lbs 6oz) circled.
Hands low, he prowled in the second and connected with a sweet left hook in the following session. Jackson attempted to stem the onslaught by turning southpaw, but still copped it to head and body.
In the final round, Singh opened the throttle and blazed away with both hands. Jackson spent most of the session pinned against the ropes. Interestingly, during those exchanges I noted: “Singh open to left hook.”
Maybe so, but the former Bulkington amateur is a work in progress. We’ll know a lot more about Callum when the going gets tough.
