Singh enters lion’s den for first title bid
AFTER six pro outings, Callum Singh has bagged the title fight he has been calling for.
And it’s a cracker. The Coventry super-fly will face fellow unbeaten prospect Sean Bruce for the Leicester lad’s Midlands title.
It’s a true 50-50 encounter – Bruce is also 6-0 – but Callum will have to travel into the lion’s den for his chance. The 10 rounder takes place at Leicester Arena on October 26.
Callum, a former vaunted amateur, has shown steady improvement. The 22-year-old, who runs his own mobile car wash business, looks more polished with each performance, if you’ll excuse the pun.
In June he oozed class in a dominant display against much heavier Jake Pollard.
He has yet to lose a round, but never been past the apprentice four round distance.
Make no mistake, this is a very big step.
“I’ve sparred Sean,” Callum said. “He’s a southpaw, a good lad and I get on with him – there’s no bad feeling. It’s just that we’re trying to achieve the same thing.
“It’s come at the right time, big time. I’ve been getting on at Jon (manager Jon Pegg) to get me a big fight and he’s delivered. October 26 is my time to deliver.
“The 10 rounds is no problem – I’ve sparred 10 rounds.”
Neither is the weight, Callum insisted, although he’s boxed as heavy as super-bantam. “I think I’d be a bit tight at flyweight,” he admitted, “and if there’s an opening, I may move up.”
Despite not yet registering a stoppage win, Callum insisted the power is there: “You’ll see that over the longer distance and against more ambitious opponents who walk onto shots.”
Callum is a product of respected Bulkington Amateur Boxing Club and in the unpaid ranks he had 32 bouts, captured Midlands titles, an Elite Midlands title and Hull Box Cup silver medal.
Singh is one of a handful of Sikh boxers in Britain’s professional ranks. He, like fellow Coventry pro Dylan Cheema, want to see more embrace the sport.
He added: “If you can back to our ancestors, we were from a warrior heritage. I want to see the next generation embrace that heritage in the ring.”
