Shabir: I’m going all the way to the top!
FANS are already beginning to sit up and take notice of former fine amateur Shabir Haidary.
The southpaw junior-lightweight has won his first three pro bouts and continues his ring education on Tommy Owens’ June 10 show at Solihull’s Planet Ice.
He has the unpaid pedigree to go far. The 24-year-old, from Gloucester, won 15 of 18 contests and picked up a novice title.
I caught up with Shabir at Sunday’s media day at Birmingham’s Eastside gym. There, he sparred with red-hot featherweight prospect Nyall Berry.
“You’ll see fireworks for sure,” he promised of his forthcoming outing.” I’ve been away for a long time (he last fought in November, gaining a six round points decision), but I’ve stayed sharp.”
A boxing coach by day, Shabir said: “I’m going all the way. I’m in it to win it – if I wasn’t, I wouldn’t bother.
“English, Commonwealth, British, European…all the way to world level. If I didn’t think I could achieve that I wouldn’t do it.”
Shabir has an all-action style. He brings excitement to the ring.
“I always wanted to go pro,” he said. “I’ve always had a pro’s style. There are things that can be improved on, but we are an unfinished book.”
One chapter will, at least, be completed at Solihull’s former ice rink on June 10.
