Rumours swirl over super-fight for Sam
WHISPERS are growing in volume over rumours of a meeting between Sam Eggington and Commonwealth light-middle champ Sam Gilley on Sky Sports next major Wolverhampton bill.
If correct, that’s a potential barnstormer for the show, staged at the city’s former Civic Hall – now christened The Halls – on February 24.
I’d pay to see that one. It’s a real 50-50 clash.
My understanding is those guiding Eggington have agreed the clash, Gilley is considering the option.
It’s one for the fans. I’ve been told Gilley’s belt would be on the line, while Stourbridge’s Sam risks his continental crown.
We know what Eggington, who has gained British and European honours in a violent 42 fight career, brings to the table.
He’s battle scarred, battle hardened and prepared to dig deeper than most for victory.
Last time out, back in May, the 30-year-old showed the difference between a tried and tested warrior and a wannabe by halting big punching Joe Pigford in five.
Eggington was too much of a beast for a man who had won all 20 bouts going into the contest, 19 inside the distance.
Pigford was destroyed.
Londoner Gilly, aged 29, has lost only one of 18 – a 2021 10 round decision to Black Country banger Danny Ball down at welter.
As a light-middle, he’s won both English and Commonwealth titles. He’s a live opponent and dangerous, with eight wins by stoppage.
Eggington’s manager Jon Pegg refused to comment about a potential fight with Gilly.
He said: “Physically, Sam is in a very good place. And people seem to underestimate the experience he has.
“2024 will be about keeping him active and getting him good fights.”
