Rogerson pro debut at Bescot Stadium
Henry Rogerson…returns as a pro after three year break
HENRY Rogerson had his last amateur bout three years ago, and he is raring to step back in the ring when he makes his professional debut on BCB’s Rising Stars show on Saturday, February 24, at the Bescot Stadium.
The 21-year-old from Crewe had an impressive amateur career, competing in 36 contests and winning multiple regional titles. Picking up the gloves at just 10-years-old, he was introduced to the sport by his friend Eddie, who took him to the gym, and he found a passion for it right away.
That gym was South Cheshire ABC, a multi-combat sweat shop in the Chuff Chuff Warehouse in Henry’s hometown. It is run by head coach Nathan Clarke, a former professional who boxed the likes of Conor Benn.
Clarke has built a growing reputation as a coach, bringing heavyweight talent Nathan Gorman to a national amateur title and will be in Henry’s corner on fight night.
Experienced manager Michael Carney completes Team Rogerso, and he will help guide the lightweight prospect through the sometimes tricky early stages of a career.
Being based in Crewe, Walsall may not seem like the most obvious choice to make his debut, but Henry has sold a lot of tickets and his fans will be making the journey down the M6 full of enthusiasm.
“I’m just really looking forward to it now,” he said. “Three years has been a long time, so right now I’d say it’s more excitement than nerves. I have been boxing for 11 years and even though the Covid situation may have pushed this back longer than I wanted, the time felt right to get in there.
“Boxing is my sole focus. I’m training six days a week and giving it everything in the gym to make sure I am in the best shape possible. I don’t know much about the other fighters on the show, not being from the area, but everyone is undefeated and at the start of their careers, like myself.”
Like most debutants, Rogerson will box in a four-rounder and is willing to put in the hard work to get to the top of the sport.
“I want to go the traditional route,” he added. “Winning the Southern Area title, then moving up to the English and keeping moving up. I’ll be boxing at lightweight, and I can do that very comfortably, so I may drop down to super-featherweight for the right opportunity in the future.
“My sponsors have been brilliant and have been very supportive already. I appreciate everyone who’s bought a ticket and on Saturday I am coming to get the win and that’s all I am thinking about right now.
