Powar poised for his first six round fight

Gully Powar…continues his journey in Wolverhampton next month

GULLY Powar reckons a longer distance will bump up his TKO ratio as he steps up to six rounds for the first time.

He’s got big plans, ahead of his next fight at the Hangar Events Venue (Pearson Street), in Wolverhampton, on Friday July 14, as part of a show hosted by BCB Promotions.

His four-round apprenticeship appears to be complete, after moving to 4-0 in his last outing, through a third points success and all in convincing fashion.

Powar, who is from the Whitmore Reans area in Wolverhampton, last outpointed Mexico’s Hector Avila Lozano, taking all of the keenly-contested rounds.

Lozano showed heart to hang in there and see the finish, as did Liam Richards before him. “The Relentless” has also beaten Stanislav Bilohurov and Mohammed Al Warith.

Bilohurov eventually folded in the fourth and final round, for a stoppage defeat, while Al Warith came under heavy fire during another session.

Powar hasn’t given anything away in the pro ranks and whitewashed Lozano and Richards, through 40-36 scorelines. Al Warith was vanquished by a 40-35 tally after a 10-8 round.

Much is expected of him after a promising amateur caree, which was spent at Wolverhampton Boxing Club. Gully racked up a ledger of 25 victories from 34 bouts.

The former Thomas Telford UTC pupil and City of Wolverhampton College student has three A Levels in public service, too, but being a sportsman is his true passion.  

He said: “I’m excited about moving up to six rounds and I feel that it will be better for me. I get stronger as a fight goes on and I’ll have more time to break opponents down.

“I have confidence in my ability, so I’ll keep moving forward. This is the start of what can help to make me great, but I just need to stay focussed.  

“I’m confident that I can smash six rounds out like it’s nothing. I’ve done 12 in sparring. I’m very fit and healthy because I’m always in the gym.

“I’ve had top-level spars, too, against James Beech (British title challenger) and Brad Foster (former British champion), which is pushing me towards the next level.

“My opponents are starting to come forward more and that spurred me on in my last performance. There are no easy Mexicans in boxing, they can all fight!

“We went toe-to-toe and had a war, so the people enjoyed it, and I did hurt him (Lozano). I heard him wince more than once. If I had six rounds, I’d have definitely stopped him.

“In my opinion, that’s the same as anyone that I’ve ever been in with. I don’t think that any of them could have gone on much longer than four rounds.

“I still believe that I’ve got the ability to become the youngest British super bantamweight champion (Brad Foster was aged 21). I’m 20, on July 29, so it’s a big year for me.

“That’s my dream and to do that I need to show people how good I really am. Ambition puts fire in my belly. I’ve got the style to pick people apart.”
