Powar faces Gomez on big Wolves show
HUMAN buzzsaw Gully Powar will make his national TV debut on Saturday night against Nicaraguan Engels Gomez.
News of the opponent on the mouthwatering show at The Hall in Gully’s home city of Wolverhampton was received last night (Tuesday) by trainer Richie Carter.
Topping the Boxxer bill, screened on Sky Sports, is Tyler Denny’s European middleweight title challenge.
For unbeaten Powar the six rounder is a chance to shine on a major card. He was to have faced Darwing Martinez who will now be in the opposite corner against Nyall Berry.
Berry, from Chelmsley Wood, is another red hot prospect making his Sky Sports bow on Saturday.
In Gomez, Powar faces a man who knows how to look after himself. He’s won eight of 29 (two draws) and is coming off a four round draw in the Czech Republic.
He’ll have the sway in weight. Gomaz is a lightweight, while Powar was looking to scale close to the super-bantam limit, where he believes his title future lies.
Trainer Carter said: “Gomez is a decent operator, he comes to have a go.”
He added: “I think this will be the making of Gully.”
Powar told me: “I can’t wait for this fight – I want to show how great I can be.”
“Whatever I do, I want to be the Number One. All the ‘Ls’ (losses placed on opponents’ amateur records) I’ve taken have been lessons to me.
“On November 18 fans are going to see serious pressure, serious body punching. They are going to see a lot of ambition, a lot of combinations.”
“I study the great champions,” Gully added. “I run seven miles at 5.30 in the morning, like Marvin Hagler did. I train three times a day, I have a nutritionist. I have strong self belief because God is in my heart. He upstairs is watching me.”
