FROM Wolverhampton to the world…
In boxing’s rarified Riyadh air, Gully Powar last night won his first contest in the WBC Grand Prix, effectively boxing’s World Cup.
In the featherweight category of the tournament, the 22-year-old boxed superbly to outpoint Californian southpaw Japhethlee Llamido over six rounds.
The boxer, trained by Richard Carter, is now in the last 16 of a competition that earns the winner a huge payday and major global contract.
And Gully, now unbeaten in 12, won the six rounder beyond doubt – 59-55 on all three scorecards.
His promoters BCB reported: “From the opening bell, Powar took the initiative, establishing his jab and dictating the pace of the fight. Llamido, a seasoned campaigner with only one previous loss on his record, struggled to cope with Powar's constant movement and sharp combinations.
“Throughout the six-round contest, Powar consistently landed the cleaner and more impactful shots. His bodywork proved particularly effective, visibly wearing down his American opponent.
Llamido showed resilience, but he had no answer for the Wolverhampton fighter's superior output and ring generalship.
“The final bell rang to the sound of enthusiastic applause from the crowd, who had been impressed by Powar's performance. Coach Richie Carter had promised we would see the best of Powar with better opposition and his faith has been proven.
“Carter, who has been with Powar since his professional debut, looked delighted with his charge's performance. Paul Mann's presence in the corner provided additional experience, contributing to Powar's composed and effective approach.
“This victory marks a significant step forward for Powar as he embarks on his quest to capture the WBC Grand Prix featherweight title.
“His impressive performance has undoubtedly announced his arrival on the world boxing scene and will have his future opponents in the tournament taking serious notice.”
