Powar: an exciting addition to the pros

Gully Powar…one to watch in the super-bantam division

BCB’S major bill at Wolverhampton’s Hangar venue provided the opportunity to see former top amateur Gully Powar in action for the first time.

The 20-year-old, from Whitmore Reans, looks an exciting, swash-buckling addition to the pro ranks. He blazes away with both hands and unleashes jarring uppercuts off hooks.

Watching his progress is going to be fun for fans.

On Friday night, Powar, taking part in his third contest, won every second of his four rounder with journeyman Liam Richards, 40-36. Richards is one of the domestic game’s great survivors. Over four rounds, he could fiddle, spoil and showboat his way to points defeat against Godzilla.

Powar’s intensity prevented Liam from uncorking his usual clowning repertoire. He was forced to take it very seriously.

Powar, guided by respected Wolverhampton fight figure Richard Carter, aims to make his mark at super-bantam.

In a previous interview, he told BCB Promotions, which handles the fledgling pro: “We’ve looked at the things that I need to improve on and gone from there.

“Sparring British and European level fighters gives me a lot of confidence. I’ve sparred Liam (Davies) before and with Ijaz (Ahmed) in both of my previous training camps.

“I’m getting better and better each day and that’s the way to greatness. I’m taking it one step at a time, but I believe I’ll get to the top level.

“I want to become the youngest British champion at super bantam. I’ll do my research, but I think it’s Brad Foster (at age 21). I’ve sparred some good rounds with him, too!

“It will be great to see what I can achieve. I’ve got a strong mindset, so I want to keep stepping up before I get to the big leagues and make more statements.

The way I fight is relentless and I don’t fear anybody.”

Powar is certainly relentless. We’ll no more about him when he steps in the ring against men who share his lofty ambitions.
