Pikire: I just want to go out and entertain

Pikire with this writer. He got his show back on the road with a win

SAM Pikire exorcised the demons that lingered from his last defeat with whitewash points victory over Jake Pollard on Saturday.

On Tommy Owens’ boutique bill at Edgbaston’s H Suite, the Big Ego (9st 6lbs) provided the crisper, cleaner boxing to take a 40-36 decision after four rounds. Pollard attempted to battle back in the fourth and final round, but his work was forced.

That was the Bradford boxer’s 54 loss in 55 outings.

Victory, albeit predictable, puts Pikire’s career back on the right track. In last month’s glitzy Box Off tournament, staged at Telford International Centre, he was stopped in the fourth and final round by Darryl Tapfuma. The Longbridge junior-lightweight matched his immensely strong opponent until the fourth when fatigue set in. That was his second loss in six.

The 30-year-old, from Longbridge, told me today: “I feel I’m ready to fight six rounds. What do I want from my career, it’s a good question? I just want to go out there and entertain. If I can go out and give fans their money’s worth, I’m happy.

“I had a point to prove on Saturday night because the opponent I lost to. It was good, we had a good game plan. I think the more rounds I do, you’ll see me stopping people.

“I want to be out there in December because this is my job, this is what I do. If they called me, I’d fight tomorrow.”

Pikire scaled 9st 6lbs, Pollard 8st 4lbs.
