Perfect learning fight for Baggies Bomber

IN his third pro outing, Baggies bomber Jay Griffiths was given the ideal workout by tough Welshman Steve Davies at Wolverhampton’s Hangar venue last night (Friday).

The 28-year-old – raised in Tipton, now based in Wombourne - took every session of the four rounder, but was made to graft for victory.

Davies, with crowd-pleasing former contender Chris Sanigar in his corner, provided a perfect ring lesson for the middleweight as he moves towards six rounders.

Tall and aggressive, Griffiths paved victory behind his jab, but could never coast against his Aberdare opponent who has now lost seven on the spin.

Davies landed a meaty left hook in the first, although his work was sporadic. Griffiths (11st 9lbs 9oz) landed a heavy left hook of his own at the end of the session and produced his best work in the second.

With Davies (11st 12lbs 4oz) feeling the pace, he kept the jab working and landed a good left to the body.

Yet, in the third, Davies connected with a shot that sent spray flying from Griffiths’ head. It only spurred the Black Country boxer to up the anti.

Jay kept the punches flowing and ended the contest with a flurry.
