Pearce: Records are just for disc jockeys

Daryl Pearce…beaten in London’s East End

TOUGH Birmingham welter Daryl Pearce slipped to defeat at York Hall, Bethnal Green, on Friday.

The 29-year-old lost every round to Alfie Winter, referee Mark Bates scoring 60-54. Surrey’s Winter has now won six on the spin.

I have a lot of time for Pearce, from Rednal. He’s one of the game’s road warriors. Before facing Winter, he had fought in Scotland three times on the spin.

His record shows only one win in 17, but those statistics don’t tell the whole story. Daryl, now with the McCrackens, has faced good, often heavier, men at short notice.

He’s brought in to test them – and does just that. Only Owen Cooper – one of the hottest prospects in the country – and Sam Noakes, the current Commonwealth lightweight champ, have prevented Pearce from hearing the final bell.

Daryl is a credit to the game, a man who has never asked for favours and has never been given favours.

On facebook, he posted: “You could honestly write a book on how my life as a boxer has been.

“You have probably seen bits over the years on here, but a lot of people would have given up a long time ago in my shoes.

“I’m still going stronger than ever. My record is bull****, I've won maybe seven but, on the road, you never get the win.

“But records are for DJs. Since I've changed teams to the McCrackens they have enabled me to bring my true self back out and it is already showing. Watch this space.”

I am. McCracken Senior and Junior are certainly ensuring their fighter earns well.

He fights in Bolton on March 24 and in Plymouth on April 1.

It would be great if the team could get him a win in Birmingham.
