Nyall a changed man for English title test

Nyall Berry…fights for English super-bantam belt this Saturday

NYALL “Non Stop” Berry – pure violent perpetual motion in the ring – fights for the English super-bantam title on Saturday with lessons learned from defeat, a new attitude adopted.

That one loss has turned him into a smart fighter, the Chelmsley Wood tornado vows.

On paper, Berry’s York Hall, Bethnal Green, clash with Lewis Frimpong for the vacant belt looks an exciting, evenly balanced 10 rounder. Oxford’s Southern Area champ has lost one of 10. That points setback came in a bid to lift the same title that’s on the line tomorrow.

Berry, who hits with real power, has lost one of 13. Last June, the 25-year-old was stopped in eight by Italian Francesco De Rosa for the IBF’s European title, but has won two on the spin since that night.

“People may think it’s a 50-50, I don’t aim to make it look like a 50-50 in the ring,” Berry said.

He believes Frimpong’s team may have judged him by the De Rosa performance. Pumped-up Berry threw caution to the wind in that one, became reckless and paid the price. Valuable lessons have been learned, he vowed.

“You lose one and they think you’re rubbish,” Berry said. “After two rounds in the ring with me, he’s going to think, ‘s***, I didn’t see that coming.

“He has a good workrate and looks strong. I’ve trained smart, learned the lessons and applied them – attitude, mentality, the way you are in everyday life. I’m excited, I’ve taken what happened against De Rosa and now I’m going to flip it.

“To be honest, I can’t believe I haven’t got a belt yet, but everything happens in God’s time. I’m following what God has put in place.”

The bout looks an absolute barnstormer, but whatever the outcome Berry aims to move down a division to bantam.

“That was always the plan,” he added. “I did the check weigh-in for this one easy. But they asked for this fight, it’s for a title, so I wasn’t going to say no, was I?”

The East End can expect fireworks at the weekend. That’s a part of Berry’s game that will never change – he’s just been working on flinging them with more thought and precision.
