Nico looks sharp as he gains a wide win

MY first look at Nico Ogbeide, the Bordesley Green pro from a white collar background.

Watching him on BCB’s Friday night bill at Birmingham’s Eastside Rooms, the style is not what I expected. He’s a better boxer than I expected.

I thought Ogbeide would a “take one to land one type”. In reality, he’s a tall, sharp junior lightweight who keeps his left hand low.

The tattooed 29-year-old raised his record to two wins and one draw with shut-out, 40-36, four round points victory over teak tough Simas Volosinas. The Lithuanian has proved near impossible to budge in a 126 bout career.

From as early as the first, Volosinas’ face looked flushed as Nico planted sharp jabs, then delivered body shots with the same hand.

Ogbeide (9st 5lbs 6oz) continued to target the body in the second and that long jab continually found its target in the third.

Volosinas (9st 10lbs) showed more aggression in the last and attempted to force the action with body shots.

Ogbeide refused to be drawn into a scrap, used the ring and kept exchanges long.

“It was a much better performance to the last one,” Nico told me. The last one was a draw with vastly experienced MJ Hall.

“I was happy with my jab. I know he felt the body shots, I hurt him with a couple of shots and maybe could’ve got him out of there.

“But it’s all part of the learning process and now it’s about pushing on.”
