Mykey believes he’ll climb to the very top
NEW pro Mykey-lee Broughton is a young man brim-full of confidence. He feels he’s got what it takes to win a world title.
The light-welter looks for his sixth straight win as a pro at Birmingham’s Eastside Rooms on February 25.
That appearance marks something of a step-up for the 21-year-old from Acocks Green. It’ll be his first six rounder – previous performances have seen him win on points over the fledgling four-round distance – and experienced Liam Richards is the favoured opponent.
To date, it’s been plain sailing, with only one of victim managing to share a round with the prospect.
Mykey compiled a fine, 49 bout career as an amateur with Birmingham City ABC, reaching national finals. His paid career is being guided by trainer and manager Anthony Manning.
The young boxer said: “I’m excited about going six rounds – the longer distance will give me more time to adapt to an opponent.
“I believe I can be a champion, I think I can be a world champion.”
Manning, a fine former pro, certainly has high hopes for his fighter.
He said: “He’s showing maturity. There are a few weaknesses we are working on – as there is with any young pro, but he does a lot of things very well.
“He’s sparred on the road with good lads and they’ve given excellent feedback. He’s a very skilful fighter, he thinks outside the box and professional boxing is a thinking man’s game. I can’t yet tell you he’s a knockout artist because there isn’t a knockout on his record.
“I think he’ll come down to lightweight and, after this one, I’d like to see him box for the vacant Midlands title. I see him getting to British level, even world level.”
Those are great expectations – and it’s going to be exciting to watch Mykey attempting to live up to them.
Perhaps Birmingham has a new superstar in the making. Anthony Manning and the fighter himself are confident it has.
