Murray twins shine in Ohio tournament

Henry Murray was too powerful for Drew Mercer

THE teenage twins of Cannock promoter and businessman Scott Murray are proving very accomplished fighters.

And 19-year-olds Henry and Charles aren’t afraid to travel overseas to gain experience. They just returned in triumph from a tournament in Ohio.

The pair are evidently chips off the old block. Dad Scott was a fine heavyweight back in the day.

They had fought in Youngstown, Ohio, before – and returned on February 1 to compete in the Burnside Box Cup competition where they shone brighter than the steel the city was once famous for.

The Youngstown link comes courtesy of resident Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, former outstanding world lightweight champ and close friend of the Murray family.

He was among the 2,000 strong crowd at Struthers Fieldhouse College Sports Hall. The champ – a regular guest at Scott’s exclusive Excelsior Sporting Club dinner shows – was there to cheer on Henry and Charles, who box for Wolverhampton ABC.

Henry was simply too strong for Ohio champ Drew Mercer from Alliance boxing club. He knocked down the 29-year-old American three times before the ref called a halt in the second.

Charles beat New York Golden Gloves amateur champion Caleb Rivera on a unanimous points decision to win the tournament for the second year running.
