Morris pulls off an upset win at Hangar

WEDNESBURY’S Josh Morris was planning to retire after his fight with Jack Finlan last night (Saturday).
The southpaw is possibly reassessing his future after pulling off an upset win – his first in a six fight career – on BCB’s March Madness show at the Hangar, Wolverhampton.
What’s more, he gained the four round points decision – 39-37 on referee Ryan Churchill’s card – with near zero preparation. “I’ve spent two weeks in the gym since Christmas,” the likeable 31-year-old told.
I’m pleased for “Mozza”, a man who always comes to scrap.
Burntwood’s Finlan, who looked so impressive in his debut, was forced back and caught by lead uppercuts and hooks.
“I did nothing (for this fight),” Morris confessed. “I killed myself to do the weight. I’m not fit, I took some shots.”
The father-of-two admitted he lost his way outside the ring, boozed and ballooned to 14 stone. “The missus supported me and told me to take control of my life,” he said.
His missus made the right call.
Finlan (10st 4lbs), having his second pro fight, took the first with jabs to head and body and landed some meaty rights.
But after that “feeling out” opener, Morris (10st 5lbs) went to work. With gloves high, he forced the action and found room for those uppercuts.
Finlan attempted to regain the initiative in the third behind his jab, only for Morris to fire back. Jack fired rights to the body in the last but could never subdue an opponent who was definitely up for the job at hand.
Finlan indulged in a spot of showboating at the end. It was much too close for such bravado.
