Michael Watson visit to Carter’s busy gym
A VIP visitor to Richie Carter’s busy Wolverhampton gym today (Friday).
Former top middleweight contender Michael Watson chatted to pros Gully Power, Jermaine Osbourne-Edwards and Lewis Morris at the bustling sweatshop.
Watson had attended Scott Murray’s Premier Suite, in Cannock, last night and dropped in on his way back to London. Scott’s two sons are both members of Wolverhampton amateur club, which shares the gym.
It was good to see the former Commonwealth champ laughing and joking with Carter and his boxing crew.
He was some fighter, good enough to halt Nigel Benn. He faced Chris Eubank for the WBO world title in 1991 and looked very unfortunate to drop a majority decision.
He was well ahead in the return, at White Hart Lane, before being stopped in the 12th. He collapsed in the ring and suffered catastrophic injuries. Michael spent 40 days in a coma and had six brain operations to remove a blood clot.
Where he is today is testament to the ex fighter’s will and courage.
Of today’s visit, Carter said: “Talking to him, his belief in God, it choked me up, it really did. He’s a truly great person.”
