Medals bonanza for Bulkington super six
WHAT a weekend for famed Warwickshire club Bulkington!
They sent six fighters to the prestigious Ware-House Box Cup in Neath, South Wales – an event that attracted 400 hopefuls.
They came back with four golds, two silvers. That is some going. A big congratulations to squad members Tommy Ledwidge, Joe Taylor, Liam Harper, Leon Chandler, Alfie Birks and Tom Gaskin.
They have a bright future ahead.
Ledwidge, aged 24, deserves particular praise. He beat a Welsh and Scottish champion on the Friday and Saturday before beating Hendry March (Grange) in the elite 80kg final. That’s light-heavy.
Liam Harper, aged 22, collected gold in the elite 57kg (feather) competition with finals victory over Grange’s Pasquale Barone.
Leon Chandler, aged 14, beat Ethan Srorrie (Springhill) at 52kg. And completing the gold medal haul, 13-year-old Alfie Birks proved too good for Kaylum Wilcox (44kg).
Joe Taylor and Tom Gaskin also came within a whisker of top spot.
Joe lost to Rathnew’s Adam Sinnott at 60kg (lightweight) – no shame there: Sinnott is an Irish champ. Tom, aged 13, was outpointed by Sonney Reilly (Platinum) in his 34kg bout.
Bulkington head coach Brendan Norman said: “I’m proud of them all and they deserved it. I know it’s about the boxing, but it’s not all about the boxing.
“We have a great bunch at the gym, they all really get on well together. And you know what they say? A happy gym is a successful gym.”
I’d imagine Bulkington is currently beaming.
