Levi’s raw, but looks set for exciting bouts

Levi Vaughan...made it two wins on the spin at Eastside Rooms

IT’S fair to say tall light-heavy Levi Vaughan does not have a traditional fighter’s background..

He comes into the game with a degree in bio-technology. “That includes molecular genetics and genetic engineering,” he told me after peeling off his second straight pro win on BCB’s Eastside Rooms, Birmingham, show last night.

Of course it does.

By day, the Birmingham 26-year-old is a business development manager.

As a fighter, southpaw Vaughan evidently carries power, but is understandably rough round the edges. He turned over after only two amateur bouts.

He dropped last night’s opponent, “Baltic Bomber” Genadij Krajevskij (12st 4lbs) with a peach of a left hook and looked for big punches throughout. Referee Ryan Churchill had Vaughan (12st 10lbs) romping to 40-35, four round victory.

Liverpool based Lithuania Krajecakij, a veteran of over 70 fights, has a long losing streak that suggest his “Bomber” tag is misplaced. But he’s tough as boot leather and, after scrambling up from that second round knockdown, recovered sufficiently to force the pace in the last session.

Vaughan’s uppercuts were, at times, wild, but he always sought to plant heavy shots.

Of his performance, Levi said: “It was OK, but I thought I could’ve done a lot better. I was more aggressive than in my first fight, but I thought I left myself a bit open.

“That was nowhere near the power I will be carrying. Once I’ve got the nutrition and strength and conditioning sorted out, you’ll see an extremely nasty animal.”

Vaughan praised BCB’s team for taking a chance on him. And it is a chance: he lost one of his two amateur bouts, albeit controversially.

“I’m extremely appreciative,” he added. “They have given me a lot of time and belief. I need to work on my technique because, currently, my style is risk prone. I need to apply the lessons they are giving me.

“I’m starting from the grassroots and I’m going to push myself as far as I can.”

Vaughan may not reach the very top, but I’ve got a feeling watching him try is going to be exciting.
