Kelly faces the man who beat Robinson

Ryan Kelly….should have too much for Serge Ambomo

CHELMSLEY Wood contender Ryan Kelly will face Cameroon’s experienced Serge Ambomo on tomorrow’s (Saturday’s) BCB bill at the Eastside Rooms, Birmingham.

It’s a sensible six rounder for Kelly after more than a year out of the ring.

Ambomo carries power, which means 29-year-old Ryan has to stay sharp and alert. And in March the 36-year-old pulled off a huge upset by outpointing fellow BCB fighter and British middleweight title challenger Andrew Robinson.

What’s more, Robinson hit the canvas in the third. The African will be looking for a second BCB scalp.

That result shows Kelly needs to grind his opponent down rather than come out guns blazing. Ryan, a quality fighter, won’t willingly engage him in the trenches the way Andrew did.

Ryan has the craft to draw his sting, then do damage.

Ambomo has failed to capitalise on the Robinson success, losing three on the spin since. In all, he’s lost 10 of 60 (three draws).

I don’t see him getting back to winning ways against “Ruthless” Ryan.

For Kelly, the six rounder is about staying disciplined and I’m sure coach John Costello will curb his fighter’s enthusiasm for a tear-up.

I believe tomorrow’s fans will be treated to textbook skills rather than TNT.
