Jakes faces veteran Costa Rican in Brum
JAKE Melvin, son of Birmingham’s tough light-welter and welterweight contender Malcolm Malvin, will face vastly experienced Costa Rican Berman Sanchez at Birmingham’s Eastside Rooms tomorrow (Saturday).
Melvin, just 21, has won both pro outings over the apprentice, four round distance.
Burman, a veteran at 39, has had 70 bouts, winning 30.
Dad and trainer Malcolm Melvin said: “Burman’s a bit of a journeyman now, but he comes to fight. He throws punches.”
Malcolm added: “It’s very early days, there’s a long road ahead. Jake’s a very tough lad and it’s a case of putting it in the right direction.
“Jake’s filling out, he’s only going to get bigger and stronger. He hasn’t got his man-strength yet. If he keeps showing the same commitment and improvement, we’ll have a fighter on our hands. I’d like to see him out four or five times, then we’ll have a look and know more about where he’s going. Me and Darren are quite excited because we know he’s getting a lot better.”
Jake said: “My dad is my coach and he’s really happy with the way that I’m coming on. No one wants better for you than your own family. He’s taught me how to relax in there.”
