Boxing Punchlines: Huey Malone

Huey Malone, amateur welter. Aged 20. Club, Christ the King, Coventry

When, where and why did you start boxing?

I started boxing at the age of 10 at Christ the King ABC and had my first fight when I was 11.

The reason I got into boxing was because it was always on the TV at home and I’d be on the pads just for fun. Boxing become more serious when Christ the King re-established in 2012 and I started to compete.

Who are your amateur coaches?

My amateur coaches past and present are: Brendan Malone (my dad), Nicky Scullion, Chris Delaney, John Dewis, Colm Doherty, Paul Green and Ronan Cunningham.

What is your record so far?

My amateur record is 64 fights with 57 wins and I am currently undefeated as a senior (since 2019).

Tell us about your amateur achievements so far?

My amateur accolades include: three times English national amateur champion (2018, 2022, 2023); three times Great Britain Tri-Nations champion (2018, 2022, 2023); 2019 English lightweight title belt; 2018 NABGC champion; boxed for the England national team (nine fights, eight wins); selected for the Team GB boxing squad (2023).

Huey Malone…recent addition to the GB squad

Congratulations on your addition to the GB team, how much does this differ from day to day club life?

Getting into the GB squad has meant that I’ve got to stay at the top of my game at all times, constantly improving, as I am competing with the best talent week in and week out.

The facilities at the Performance Institute are top-class and I’m really fortunate to have the opportunity to train there.

What ambitions for the 2023/24 season and beyond?

For the 23/24 season, my main aims are to box for Team GB internationally and to be selected to box in the Olympic qualifiers at the start of 2024.

What’s the ultimate dream in boxing?

I would say my ultimate dream in boxing is to be a multi-weight world champion and to still enjoy boxing as much as I do now, even when I’m in the back end of my career.
