How about Tyler and Jermaine for a title?
MIKE Tyler, the unbeaten Bermudian now based in Birmingham, watched intently on Friday night as Wolverhampton hope Jermaine Osbourne-Edwards peeled off his seventh straight victory.
I caught him out of the corner of my eye.
Tyler, who also sports a 7-0 record, looked on at the Hangar Events Venue as if studying form. I may be wrong, but the 26-year-old appeared to be assessing a future opponent.
I could have been imagining it.
Following that chance encounter, I was struck by a light-bulb moment.
Osbourne-Edwards wants a Midlands title fight next. Tyler wants a title fight.
What a great collision of two prospects for the welterweight belt. Tyler has competed at light-middle, but has always been at pains to point out his championship future lies at welter.
I’m yet to be convinced. He looks tall and lean at 11st.
It’s a fight I’d like to see. It’s a natural between two hungry prospects.
It would also be a collision of two of the game’s larger-than-life characters. Jermaine, in particular, has the back-story of a troubled life turned around by boxing. He has the following and colourful ring entrance.
Tyler, who left Bermuda to seek boxing fame in Britain, is a good looking man, a “cool dude”, as they say, with a smooth fighting style.
As a fight, it wouldn’t be difficult to make and it’s what our game needs: a 50-50 title contest between two men on the way up. Both want a title fight sooner rather than later.
I believe it’s a logical progression for both. And there’s an intriguing conundrum attached to it.
Osbourne-Edwards looks strong at welter, will Osbourne-Edwards be as strong at the lighter weight?
I’d like to see the 10 rounder – a very meaningful Midlands title fight – happen.
Hopefully, the Board of Control feel the same.
