Gritty Pearce is a hit north of the border

Pearce…tough operator keeping a busy schedule

DARYL Pearce is certainly putting the miles in to earn a living.

And the tough Rednal welter is certainly gaining a following north of the border.

On Friday, Daryl fought a four-rounder at Renfrew’s Normandy Hotel and lost to local Taylor Coyle, 39-37 on referee Kevin McIntyre’s card.

That was the 29-year-old’s third fight in Scotland on the spin.

“They keep asking me back for a reason,” Daryl laughed. “He (Coyle) kept holding on, he was tall and awkward. They gave me a round, I thought I got it. You know how hard it is on the road.”

Pearce, brave and game, has won only one of 16, but the statistics don’t mirror what a gritty performer the Brummie is.

He always comes to fight, has featured in some great scraps and been stopped just twice. He took a year-and-a-half out after current Midlands champ Owen Cooper halted him in April, 2021, and has returned with a new enthusiasm for the game.

Now guided by Spencer McCracken Snr and Jnr, he’s keeping a busy schedule.

“I’ve got a six rounder in Gloucester on March 10, then on the 24th it’s a televised show in Bolton.

“To be honest, we’re still trying to find my best fighting weight. I came in lighter last weekend and my next fight is at 10st 7lbs. Most of my past fights have been at 11st (light-middle).

“The McCrackens have brought back my old style. Before turning pro, my best shots were body shots. I hardly threw one as a pro, but now they’ve got me working on them.”

The game needs fighters like Daryl Pearce – and, hopefully, the McCrackens can reward his efforts with another win.
