Goodchild: I want to fight every 2 months
CONNOR Goodchild – a Birmingham welter with a legion of passionate fans – is a boxer in a hurry.
The Kings Norton prospect looks for his fifth straight win at Dudley Town Hall on June 10 – and that bout may see him step up to six rounds level. That, he insists, is the start of a very busy schedule.
To date, the 24-year-old’s career has gone swimmingly. Guided by Spencer McCracken Snr and Jnr, he’s not lost a session while winning his four rounders on points.
Those within the game are now beginning to sit up and take notice. The man looks a talented addition to the professional ranks.
Connor, a ground worker by day, said: “I want to fight at least every two months. I want to be 8-0 or 9-0 by the end of the year.
“As far as a Midlands title fight – I Ieave that to Spencer. I need a couple of six rounders and then the Board (of Control) will put me forward. I know my potential and Spencer knows my potential. I’d definitely be up for it.
“I think the longer distance will suit me, definitely. In sparring I do a lot more – it’s four rounds, then out, another four rounds, another four rounds…Sometimes we do 20 rounds on a Sunday.”
Goodchild has emerged as a big ticket-seller. Of his fanbase, he said: “It’s not bad, is it? A lot of people share your stuff (on social media), they’ll comment on your stuff, but getting them to buy a ticket can be difficult. There are a lot of armchair fans out there.
“The numbers will grow more as the fights get bigger. Some people say they don’t want to see me fight journeymen.
“I don’t want to fight journeymen, either – but you have to fight who you’re told to fight.
“The support goes a long way, I don’t think people realise that, they don’t realise how important it is. If you don’t have the support you’re thrown to the back of the queue.”
How far does the fledgling fighter think he can go?
“I want to win a British title,” he said. “You have to manifest it and believe it every day. The (Lonsdale) Belt is the most beautiful belt in boxing and I’d be so proud to have it. That is my dream.”
Connor intends to leave no stone unturned to make that dream a reality.
