First Cannock, then Toulouse for Barry!

THERE’S a surprise Continental twist to next week’s glitzy St Patrick’s boxing show in Cannock next week – and the bout has forged an intriguing French connection for local fighters.

On promoter Scott Murray’s superb annual Excelsior Club emerald gathering next Thursday, Toulouse light-welter Dassa Namana will face Stoke warrior Jamie Stewart.

That looks a cracker. Both Namana, who has won five of 10 (one draw), and Stewart are aggressive, all action performers – take one to give one types.

Excelsior patrons will recall former Midland champ Stewart’s thrilling draw with outstanding Irish amateur Roy Moylette at the venue in June, 2023. Jamie came within a whisker of stoppage victory.

“A French promoter asked if I could put Namana on the show because he wants him to fight for a French area title soon after,” Scott explained.

It’s a warm-up that could turn into a war for the visitor.

Scott is being well rewarded for the favour.

In return, Murray has gained an assurance Coventry’s Jess Barry – headlining at the Excelsior next week – will box on Namana’s title show, scheduled to take place in Toulouse on April 26. That will be her first overseas engagement.

What’s more, Scott’s sons, 18-year-old twins Charles and Henry, both fine amateurs – will also feature on the card. In France, pro-am shows are common.

The Excelsior dinner show, with Barry McGuigan in attendance, looks set to serve-up some tasty battles.

“Banshee” Barry will defend her English featherweight title and bid to lift the Commonwealth silver belt.

She’ll face former amateur foe Linzi Buczynskyj from Bolton over 10 rounds.

Birmingham based Bermudian Tyler Christopher – unbeaten in nine – features in an interesting six rounder with experienced Jordan Grannum.

Islington’s Grannum is one of the most accomplished journeymen in the business.

Tyler, aged 28, recently told me: “I haven’t travelled six rounds yet. I want six rounds then start banging on the door for big names. Since coming here in 2019, I’ve transformed into a complete fighter.

“I truly believe I’m British level, I truly believe I can mix it up with those guys. I feel my skills are as good as anyone in there (the top rankings), I just need the experience. Talent wise, I feel I can make it up there.”

The bill will also feature Birmingham light-heavyweight hope Ryan Whelan and Cannock hope Zach Evans, though opponents for the pair are yet to be named.
