Fields: I still know my time will come

Fields (right) and Rafferty show respect at the end

BEN Fields has vowed, following his gallant defeat for the Commonwealth silver light-welter belt: “My time will come.”

And the 33-year-old Digbeth hardman can take some pride in his performance against Jack Rafferty at Liverpool’s Olympia.

He forced the Manchester prospect, now undefeated in 21 contests, to dig deep before succumbing in the ninth.

Fields, at times, dragged Rafferty into deep waters.

Ben said today: “Obviously, I’m upset with not getting the win, but not disheartened.”

Rafferty dropped Fields in the sixth with a left to the body that was deemed low and after that concentrated on the mid-section.

Another left downstairs hurt 33-year-old Fields in the ninth and a left to the head dropped him heavily.

He got up, but was being driven back under a relentless attack when the referee stepped in.

“The body shots were hard to recover from,” Ben said. “I took one in the sixth, but still gave it a good go.

“Maybe I should’ve hit back (in the ninth), but I was a bit hurt at the time. I went into the fight thinking about what I was going to do and we planned to take him into the second half of the fight.”

He added: “I’ll be fighting again, 100 per cent – when and where, we’re not too sure. I still know my day will come, my time will come.

“I think, regardless of the result, my performance was good and we’re taking the positives from that.”
