Fielding is banking on vast experience
LOUIS Fielding had the air of an elder statesman at yesterday’s press conference for the lightweight Top Boxer tournament, staged on September 9 at Planet Ice, Solhull.
At the age of 33, Tamworth’s Fielding is an exemplary ambassador for the game. He’s faced fine opposition during an 18 bout career and has battled for Midlands titles.
Now, Fielding is pitting his experience against the hungry guns vying for the Top Boxer’s £6,000 first prize.
There is a lot to like about Louis. The man’s a nice individual blessed with male model good looks, to boot.
At the Planet Ice press call, he steered clear of the trash talk that has polluted today’s game. If he’d worn a t-shirt, it would’ve read: “Been there, done that, worn the t-shirt.”
Speaking from the top table, Fielding said: “I believe I’ve got the experience, that will be a positive factor, I’ve been in with the best.
“I’m getting on a bit and you’ve got to take the opportunities when they come. I’ve been around prizefighter, I did a bit of the preparation with Dylan Cheema for his. I’m looking forward to it.”
Away from the cameras, Louis told me: “I’ve been in with the best and I believe in myself.
“Winning this would be a great chapter in my book.”
Lincoln’s DJ Tollerton has entered the competition as something of an unknown commodity. Yet the 22-year-old – a towering lightweight - is unbeaten in three and making pleasing early progress.
He’s coming to win, he pledged.
“My manager had Joe Hughes in the Boxxer tournament,” he said. “I’ve seen it up close, it’s tough. I’m prepared for this, I think it suits me, I’m a fit kid.
“I want to test myself. I didn’t go into boxing to have my first eight fights against kids it wasn’t worth getting out of bed for.”
