Faizey wins Midland title for Fitzpatrick’s

Henry Faizey…tough and possesses dogged determination

FITPATRICK’S Gym, in Leamington, is celebrating the crowning of a Midlands champ.

On Sunday, at Acocks Green, Birmingham, teenager Henry Faizey won the under 67kg NABGC (National Association of Boys and Girls Clubs) final following three action packed rounds against Dean Doe (Droitwich).

Henry, who lives in Stratford and originally boxed for Hall Green, was rocked to his bootlaces by a big punch in the opening seconds, but cranked up the pressure to take the decision.

Gym boss Derek Fitzpatrick said: “Henry’s tough and that opening punch woke him up. I can’t praise Doe highly enough. He’s a solid counter-puncher, has won nine of 11 bouts and, I think, there’s a very good kid there. Henry just had a little too much experience.

“Henry’s strengths are his toughness and dogged determination. He’s a really nice lad from a nice family.

“The dream is to go pro, but first he’s got to serve his apprenticeship. As a fighter, he’s been unlucky. He’s won a few box cups and Midlands titles. This year he lost to a lad in the Haringey Box Cup and I thought he should’ve won, I was annoyed about that one.

“He boxed the same lad later at Hull and lost by a split decision. It could’ve gone either way, but I had no complaints about that one.

Henry, who has won 23 of 30, will face the competition’s East Midlands champ this weekend.

It proved a good weekend for Fitzpatricks.

Winning team…Parghat Singh with dad and trainer Harmi

On Saturday night, Parghat Singh, aged 14, took a points decision over Braunstone Golden Gloves’ Jack Sharp on the latter’s own show. It was a skilful, absorbing contest.

Harmi Singh, Parghat’s dad and trainer, said: “This was a classy match up  and both lads  earned and gave respect after the bout.”
