Excelsior scoop title eliminator for Nyall

Poster for the next chapter in the Excelsior club’s exciting story

YOU heard it here first…

Nyall Berry’s next fight will be an English featherweight title eliminator.

The big hitting featherweight’s big chance comes at promoter Scott Murray’s new sporting club, The Excelsior, on June 22. The venue will be Scott’s Premier Suite in Cannock.

The news will lift the unbeaten Chelmsley Wood prospect’s spirits after hopes of a Midlands title fight with Lewis Morris fell through.

“This one’s even bigger for him,” said Scott. “Jon (manager Jon Pegg) hasn’t come back yet, but it will be an eliminator.”

The Excelsior’s second show is certainly oozing quality.

Ireland’s former outstanding amateur Ray Moylette – an ex world youth champion – is on the bill and it looks like rugged Digbeth light-welter Ben Fields will be in the opposite corner. Moylette has lost two of his 15 pro bouts and, last year, was stopped in the 10th and final round by Dalton Smith for the WBC international belt. Pushing Smith shows how good – and tough – Moylette is.

Scott said: “Ray has signed a promotional deal with us. He’ll be coming from Ireland to fight in sunny Cannock.”

Cannock’s own unbeaten middleweight  Ollie Cooper is also scheduled to fight on the show.

Adding to the occasion, famous faces Ray Mancini, Richie Woodhall, Steve Bunce and Barry Jones will be present.

The Excelsior’s third show, on September 28, is also coming together nicely. Liverpool’s April Hunter is scheduled to fight and, hopefully, Coventry’s English title challenger River Wilson-Bent.

Scott, a former heavyweight, should be praised for single-handedly reviving the glitzy days of sporting clubs. It’s a bold venture and, judging from the success of last month’s opening night, one that has hit the ground running.

He told me: “I was pleased with the way the first night went. A former world champ in Sam Eggington, an amateur star in Niall Farrell and Nyall Berry, one of the brightest prospects around – you can’t get much better than that.

“We’re now looking to put on more 50-50 fights.”
