Eggington set to be a part of Excelsior’s best show to date

SAM Eggington – undisputed king of the crowd-pleasers – looks set to appear on Scott Murray’s mouth-watering Excelsior sporting club show this month as a social media storm gathers over his absence from Saturday’s major bill in Wolverhampton.

An opponent is being sought for The Savage on Murray’s November 30 show – a celebration of St Andrew’s Night held at Cannock’s Premier Suite.

English boxers will be pitted against Scottish opponents on a tartan draped night that will also feature whisky tasting and haggis. Eggington, however, will probably face a fighter from overseas.

His inclusion follows a twitter row sparked by the former British, European and world champ’s absence from this Saturday’s massive Boxxer bill at The Halls – formerly Wolverhampton Civic Hall, screened on Sky Sports. Black Country favourite Tyler Denny tops in a challenge for the European middleweight title.

The Stourbridge 30-year-old expected to be a part of the action. The fact he’s not has not gone down well on social media.

Eggington has become a byword for violent, unrelenting action. He has gone to the well numerous times in a 42 fight career. He has won back-to-back “fight of the year” awards.

Last time out he showed there was still plenty in the tank by dramatically snapping the long unbeaten run of Joe Pigford – on Sky Sports.

His exclusion from Saturday’s show has certainly ruffled feathers on twitter.

“Sweet Pugilism” tweeted: “Undoubtedly Sky Sports boxing loss. Baffling decision considering what they have been putting on this past year.”

Mick Fewster said: “I'd rather watch Sam shadow-box than 99.9 per cent of fights boxer have promoted.”

Rob Tebbutt weighed-in with: “Sam Eggington has beaten more undefeated fighters than James Toney (seven) in 48 fewer fights.”

The controversy has given Scott Murray the chance to again put one of the game’s favourite warriors on an Excelsior card. Eggington fought on the plush sporting club’s opening night.

It looks to be the Excelsior’s best card to date, topped by the meeting of heavyweights Hosea Stewart, who scales over 20 stone, and Nick Campbell.

The bill will also feature top light-welter Kaisee Benjamin, women’s prospect Jess Barry and a true 50-50 encounter between two unbeatens, Coventry’s Callum Singh and Michael McCrone from Glasgow.

Scott said: “I’d love to have Sam fight on the next Excelsior Sporting Club Show on St Andrew’s Night against the Scottish.

“He was on the first Excelsior show and it’s a pleasure to have him back.”
